Truth of the Week 13: Work for the Lord

by Catherine King and Jenny Cioto

Colossians 3:23 – Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. NIV

Work ethic and work attitude are huge points in this short verse. Perspective is spelled out for us here by Paul and Timothy.

So let us also look at the word heartily. Merriam-Webster defines it:  in a hearty manner; a :with all sincerity: wholeheartedly; b :with zest or gusto; wholly, thoroughly.

Again, Paul uses very direct language with his believing audience – less eloquently he could have said – Hey! I don’t care what you have to do, do it with a fullness of your being and your being needs to be truly happy about it!

Most likely you’ve had at least one thing this week that made you not want to put your whole heart into it. Let’s see. I will be transparent here and say I don’t enjoy web developing and I have to maintain our website. That’s my least favorite part of my work here at Pursuing true North.

A glitch goes down on the site and I have no idea what happened or how to fix it and I have a grown up come apart over it. Then I don’t want to deal with it for a while. Then I have to get myself mentally together to sit down and work at it again.

I also know that I have to have a good attitude to even think I might be successful. If I put on the perspective that everything I am doing is ultimately to please my Father God, then I naturally will have a heart and mind change towards my work and I can give it good effort and set myself up for better success.

When I pout and moan about my work I am in exact opposition to this verse. Ouch. See, preaching to myself here.

I have an office I clean with my family every weekend and have been for almost 10 years now. I have to say I knew what a blessing that office was to our family and it naturally made it easier to clean public toilets knowing that God was so obviously in this gift of work. So yes, some work comes with a better built in attitude than others but again it’s about working towards the goal of having a good work attitude and ethic in EVERYTHING.

Work ethic – this is hugely important. If we are working for the Lord we need to think about things like cutting corners. Maybe your boss won’t notice you cut corners – but you know it and so does God. If you felt like you were working with God as your boss and not the mean cranky tyrant of a boss you have (not mine just being clear here) – it sure would make it easier to do that busy work you clearly don’t believe is necessary to do.

Working hard is important for the sake of doing a good job at whatever you are doing but it’s good for us, too. I find it rewarding to work hard and see a good outcome from it. It’s encouraging to know when you do everything with good perspective and an attitude for God it will work out at some point for the good.

And don’t forget – if God brought you to it and He will strengthen you if you ask and if you know He’s with you wherever you go – you are unstoppable.
